A client left a little extra. The right reply is short, warm, and about the gesture — not the amount, and never a hint about next time. This page covers when to send a tip thank-you, what to put in it, and the small mistakes that make it awkward. Then it gives 30 copy-paste messages by how the tip arrived (cash, card, Venmo or Cash App, gift card), by occasion (generous, holiday, after a hard job), and by trade, plus card notes and a few replies for tricky moments.
Names like Jordan and Alex are stand-ins. Swap in the client’s name and one real detail from the visit. None of these mention a dollar amount unless the note explains why.
Same day, or the next morning. A thank-you that arrives a week later reads like an afterthought. If you found cash at the end of the visit, a text before you leave the driveway is ideal.
Every time, but scaled. A regular who adds a few dollars each visit doesn’t need a paragraph every week. A quick “thanks for the extra” is enough; save the longer note for a holiday tip or an unusually generous one.
As its own message, or as a clear line. If you are already texting a payment receipt, one clear sentence about the tip is fine. Don’t let it disappear inside invoice details.
Even when you aren’t sure it was a tip. If a card payment came in higher than the invoice, ask kindly instead of assuming — see “Overpaid or a tip?” below.
What to say (and what to leave out)
Say thank you plainly. “Thank you for the tip” is not tacky. Clients like knowing it reached you.
Name one specific thing. The dog, the deep clean before their guests, the leak you chased down. It shows the tip was for a person, not a transaction.
Leave out the amount in most cases. “The generous tip” says it without turning it into accounting. Mention the number only if you need to confirm it (an overpayment or a gift card you’re not sure about).
Leave out the next ask. No review link, no referral request, no upsell in the same text. Those can go in a separate message on another day if you want.
Optional: a light forward-looking line like “See you next Tuesday.” It closes the loop without asking for anything.
Mistakes that make it awkward
Asking for another tip, even as a joke (“keep them coming!”). It turns a gift into an expectation.
Over-thanking. Three sentences of gratitude for a small tip can embarrass the client. Match the size of the note to the moment.
Making them feel bad for not tipping before. Never compare (“much more than usual!”). Say “generous,” not “finally.”
Guilt-heavy wording like “you have no idea how much I needed this.” Keep personal money worries out of client messages.
Mixing it with a complaint or a price change. If you have news to deliver, send the thank-you first and the news another day.
Forgetting the records. Tips are generally taxable income for self-employed workers. Jot them in the same place you track payments so year-end isn’t a scramble.
A worked example
Jordan, a house cleaner, finishes a pre-holiday deep clean for Alex. When the card payment arrives it includes an extra $40 on top of the invoice.
That evening Jordan sends the “Tip on a card payment” text below, changing the detail to “the oven and the guest room.” She doesn’t mention $40, doesn’t mention booking more, and doesn’t send a review link that day. Two weeks later, at her regular visit, she asks for a review in person instead — a separate moment.
Alex later tells a neighbor about Jordan. Not because of the text itself, but because it was easy and genuine.
By how the tip arrived
Cash, card, app, or envelope — the wording barely changes, but naming how it arrived tells them it reached you.
Cash left on the counter
You found it after they left.
Hi Alex — found the tip you left on the counter. Thank you, that was really kind. See you next time.
Cash handed to you
Text later the same day.
Thanks again for the tip today, Jordan. It was a pleasure working on the deck — enjoy the weekend.

Tricky tip situations
An overpayment, a tip after a mistake, or a tip you can’t keep.
Overpaid or a tip?
Check before you assume.
Hi Jordan — your payment came in at $20 more than the invoice. Was that meant as a tip, or should I refund the difference? Either way is fine. Thank you!
They tipped but you had a problem on the job
Thank them, then own the issue.
Hi Alex — thank you for the tip, that was kind. I also wanted to say again that I’m sorry about the scratch on the floor. I’ll bring the touch-up kit Thursday.
Your business can’t accept tips
Say no kindly, offer an alternative.
Hi Jordan — that’s so kind of you, thank you. My company doesn’t let me accept tips, so I’ve sent it back. A kind word to the office means just as much!
How to send it
Copy one message, change the name and the specific detail, and send it from your own phone or email. One short thank-you per tip is plenty.
If you also want a review or a referral, wait for a different day and use a separate message, so the thank-you stays a thank-you.
