Holiday closure message — Christmas & New Year (sign + text + email)

Most small service businesses close for at least part of the stretch between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day. Customers don’t mind — what bothers them is not knowing. A good holiday closure message names the exact days you’re closed, the first day you’re back, and what happens to anything already booked. This page gives you closed-for-Christmas sign wording for the door or window, short client texts, longer holiday closure email notices, and voicemail or auto-reply scripts. Swap in your own dates and send from your own phone or email.

Sample dates match the 2026–2027 season: Christmas Eve Thu Dec 24, Christmas Day Fri Dec 25, Sat Dec 26, New Year’s Eve Thu Dec 31, New Year’s Day Fri Jan 1, 2027, and first full week back Mon Jan 4. Change names, hours, and dates to yours.

When to use this

What a holiday closure notice should include

Keep the greeting short. One “Happy holidays” or “Merry Christmas” at the end is plenty; the dates are what the customer actually needs. If your clients come from mixed backgrounds, “Happy holidays” and “closed for the holidays” work for everyone.

Closed for Christmas & holiday sign wording

Short lines for a door, window, counter, or shared calendar. Copy the text, print it large, or write it by hand. Put the reopen date on its own line so it can be read from the sidewalk.

Closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

Christmas visit auto-skips

Standing appointment falls on Dec 25.

Offer a makeup day before Christmas

Let them choose.

Hi Alex — I’m closed Dec 24–25. Want to skip that week, or move your visit to Tue Dec 22 or Wed Dec 23? Either works on my end.

Already booked on a closed day

Need to move an existing appointment.

Hi Jordan — I’ll be closed Thu Dec 31 and Fri Jan 1, so we need to move your visit. I can do Wed Dec 30 at 10 or Sat Jan 2 at 1. Which works better?

Other closed dates — a trip, Thanksgiving week, July 4

Short notes for any closed stretch that isn’t Christmas or New Year. Name the dates and the first day back.

Skip that week’s standing visit

The usual Tuesday doesn’t happen. The one after does.

Hi Alex — I don’t take jobs Thanksgiving week. Your usual Tuesday that week is skipped; we’ll pick up the Tuesday after.

Closed, sort it later

Don’t run a reschedule menu now. You’ll text when you’re back.

Closed the week of July 4. Anything that was on that week I’ll sort when I’m back — I’ll text then, not now.

Emergency only

Limited contact.

Out for the holiday week (Dec 22–28). I won’t be on normal jobs; for true emergencies text URGENT and I’ll do what I can.

Closed for a family trip

Any stretch of days off.

Hi Alex — I’ll be away on a family trip from June 7 through June 13 and won’t be taking jobs that week. First day back is Monday, June 14. Your usual visit that week is skipped unless you want me to move it.

Closed a few days, booked visits move

Offer the moved time in the same text.

Hi Jordan — I’m closed Thursday and Friday this week. Your Friday visit can move to Saturday at 10 or Monday at 9. Which works better?

How to send it

Send the client text or email about two weeks before Christmas — mid December — so regulars can move standing visits and anyone who needs work done before the break can still book. Send a one-line reminder a day or two before you close. Put the sign up on your door or window a few days early so walk-ups see it, and update your voicemail and email auto-reply on your last working day.

Copy one block, swap in real names, dates, and hours, and send it from your own phone or email. Keep it to a few sentences and lead with the dates. If you also want to thank clients for the year, send that as a separate holiday greeting or keep it to one line so the closure dates don’t get lost. When you’re back, a quick note to anyone whose visit moved helps the new year start smoothly.
